Prototype-to-Production Chasm
Trigger: Using a rapid-prototyping shop for initial builds, then discovering they lack AS9100 for LRIP.
Mitigation: Ensure the prototype supplier has a certified production facility or plan for a complete technology transfer to a Tier-1 supplier.
Rare-earth magnet licensing volatility
Trigger: Specifying a high-temperature NdFeB magnet grade with dysprosium or terbium while the program has defense, dual-use, or domestic-only sourcing constraints.
Mitigation: Evaluate magnet-free (EESM) and induction alternatives early, and require the supplier to document current origin, licensing, and end-use review assumptions before RFQ award.
Hidden Qualification Costs & Redesign Loops
Trigger: Supplier quote does not assign ownership for DO-160 environmental testing, conformity evidence, first-article inspection, and retest work after a design change.
Mitigation: Explicitly state whether the supplier or aircraft OEM owns each validation activity, and ask third-party labs for quoted schedule and cost before freezing the motor envelope.
